The data displayed in this chart shows the total number of Bitcoin in circulation over time. Bitcoin has a predetermined steady and controlled supply, making bitcoin scarce, similar to the properties of Gold. Bitcoin is created with each new mined block. The rate of block creation is adjusted every 2016 blocks to target for a constant two week adjustment period.

The number of bitcoin generated per block is set to decrease with a 50% reduction every 210,000 blocks or approximately every four years, which is often referred to as halvings. The result is that the number of bitcoin in existence will not exceed the 21 million Bitcoin supply limit; the dashed line represents the forecasted supply which may be slightly off due to variations.
